Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged members of the House of Representatives to prioritize the country’s progress over political divisions.

He made this call during an Iftar dinner hosted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the New Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday night.

Addressing the lawmakers on behalf of the President, VP Shettima emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in leadership, reminding them that history would judge leaders not by their personal battles but by the bridges they build for the nation’s development.“

“In the end, history will not judge us by the number of personal battles we fought against one another, but by the bridges we were able to build together. We are gathered here this evening not as adversaries in a contest for power, but as partners in the noble task of nation-building,” Shettima was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha.

Reflecting on the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the concurrent Lenten season, the Vice President encouraged both Muslims and Christians to embrace introspection and renew their commitment to Nigeria’s unity.

“This sacred month of reflection and renewal reminds us to choose stability over strife, collaboration over conflict, and dialogue over discord. What binds us as a nation is far greater than what divides us,” he added.

Shettima praised President Tinubu’s leadership style, describing him as a visionary leader who fosters inclusivity.

He assured Nigerians that the administration’s economic policies are beginning to yield results, setting the nation on a path of sustained growth.

“The economy has turned the corner. We are now on the path to sustained economic growth, and with perseverance, we will create a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive,” the Vice President said.

He also commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and other House leaders for maintaining harmony within the legislative chamber, acknowledging that peace and development are intertwined.

“There can be no development without peace, and there can be no peace without development. The unity within the House is a testament to our collective resolve to move Nigeria forward,” Shettima remarked.

In his response, Speaker Abbas expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the invitation and his continued support for the legislature.

He underscored the importance of reflection during Ramadan and urged Nigerians to pray for the country’s economy, security, and leadership.

“As we all know, the month of Ramadan entails many things, one of them is reflection; where were you before, where are you now, and where do you want to be? I believe Nigeria more than ever before needs this type of reflection,” Abbas said.

In a remarkable gesture, the House of Representatives announced a donation of ₦705 million — a six-month, 50% deduction from members’ salaries — to support President Tinubu’s humanitarian initiatives and aid vulnerable Nigerians.

The Speaker assured the President of the House’s unwavering support, noting that the administration’s policies aim to improve the lives of citizens and propel the country forward.
