In a groundbreaking move to promote gender inclusion in politics, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has directed that all vice-chairmanship positions across the state’s 25 local government areas be exclusively reserved for women in the forthcoming local government elections.
The governor made this declaration in Minna, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to ensuring greater female representation in leadership roles.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso, Governor Bago expressed that women have long been sidelined in governance despite their vital contributions to society.
Governor Bago called on all stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political actors in Niger State to support the initiative, stressing that inclusivity is crucial for sustainable development.
He noted that empowering women at the grassroots level will foster balanced, innovative, and people-centered governance across the state.
This directive aligns with the governor’s broader agenda of building a “New Niger,” characterized by inclusive governance, infrastructure renewal, and rural transformation.
Since assuming office, Bago’s administration has launched significant projects, including road expansions, flyover constructions, and the establishment of the IBB University Lapai Teaching Hospital to improve healthcare and education access in the state.
The governor reaffirmed his belief that empowering women in leadership positions will not only improve local governance but also accelerate development across Niger State.
