Osun State Launches Skills and Entrepreneurship Training Programme to Combat Unemployment

The Osun State Government, through its Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has announced the commencement of the Osun State Skills Upgrade and Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme.

The initiative, aimed at reducing unemployment and fostering wealth creation, will kick off on Monday, November 25, 2024.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Rev. Bunmi Jenyo, the programme will train 500 participants in ten different skill categories during this quarter.

According to the statement, The training will run for three weeks and will be officially inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, at the SDG Skill Acquisition Centre in Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government Area.

It added that Participants will have the opportunity to select a skill area of interest, including leather works, paint-making and painting, soap and chemical production, phone repair, head-tie and make-up, barbing, fashion design, hairdressing, catering services, and bead-making.

In addition, all participants will undergo compulsory Entrepreneurship Development Training provided by the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

The Commissioner highlighted the programme’s objective to empower unemployed individuals and others interested in acquiring new skills, steering them away from dependence on white-collar jobs. “This initiative is a unique opportunity for participants to gain financial independence and potentially become employers of labour,” Jenyo stated.

Participants who complete the programme will receive a certificate and a seed loan of ₦50,000 from the Osun Micro Credit Agency to kickstart their businesses.

The trainers are experienced professionals equipped to guide participants toward self-reliance in their chosen fields.

The Ministry also extended an invitation to members of the public seeking additional income streams to join the programme.

The initiative is part of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke’s broader strategy to empower citizens and drive economic development in the state as the next batch of the programme is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.
