The Federal Government on Wednesday officially commenced the construction of a N12 billion road in Eti-Oni, Atakumosa East Local Government Area of Osun State, marking the end of a 40-year wait for the community.
The 56-kilometer road project, supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works, was met with widespread celebration by residents.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, represented by Mr. Oluseyi Adedipe, Acting Controller of Works in Osun State, revealed that the project encompasses three roads, which will be executed in phases to ensure completion within 12 months.
The initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to unlock the economic potential of the region by providing access for farmers to transport their produce to commercial hubs.
Umahi emphasized the need for contractors to adhere to ministry standards to ensure value for the taxpayers’ investment, noting that the road would significantly boost Eti-Oni’s economy, a major cocoa-producing community in the state.
In his remarks, the Oloni of Eti-Oni, Oba Dokun Thompson, lauded the government’s efforts, describing the project as a long-overdue lifeline for the community.
“This road has been abandoned for more than 40 years. When you have fertile land but no access, it is like a cemetery. Today, we are witnessing renewed hope for future generations,” the monarch said. “Many youths will now be motivated to embrace agriculture.”
Oba Thompson also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving the project, calling it a perfect gift as the town prepares for its cocoa festival.
“We are grateful to Mr. President for remembering this rural community. This gesture shows that other areas will benefit even more during this season of renewed hope,” he added.
Residents, including Chief Musibau Gbadamosi, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the road would enhance economic activities and the movement of agricultural produce. He pledged the community’s continued support for the Tinubu administration.
