Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced that the state will now pay a minimum wage of N85,000 to its workers, surpassing the N70,000 approved by the Federal Government in July.
This announcement follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the N70,000 minimum wage bill into law, which concluded months of deliberation among government officials, labor unions, and the private sector.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sanwo-Olu clarified that the state’s decision is not about competing with other states but is based on its capacity to support a higher wage.
“I’m glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we discussed with our union, is now N85,000,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
“It’s not a competition; it’s about affordability and capacity. Lagos has a high cost of living, and we are fully aware of that.”
The governor also highlighted that the state had increased workers’ salaries earlier in the year, expressing his aspiration to raise the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025.
“It’s my wish to raise the minimum wage to N100,000 next year,” he added.
“Not to make others look bad, but to ensure our people have a living wage and feel the government is truly working for them.”
