The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has pledged that the Nigeria Police will handle the August 1 planned protest with the utmost professionalism.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during a meeting with Strategic Police Managers, which included officers from the rank of Commissioner of Police and above, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of maintaining order and security.

The meeting aimed to review and share intelligence from various Police Commands to ensure national security.

Egbetokun assured that the police are prepared to manage the protest in a professional manner, focusing on protecting those participating in peaceful demonstrations.

“We are committed to providing security for peaceful protesters,” Egbetokun stated.

“However, we have a duty to safeguard lives and property, and we will not tolerate vandalism or violence under the guise of protest.”

The IG highlighted that maintaining order would be straightforward if the protest remains peaceful. He stressed that while the right to protest is fundamental, it must be exercised peacefully, as violent protests are deemed criminal and unacceptable in a civilized society.

Egbetokun also urged Nigerian youths to disregard any calls for violent demonstrations, advocating for a peaceful approach to expressing grievances.
