Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has issued a stern warning to developers and residents against constructing houses without approved building plans, threatening to demolish poorly built structures that pose a threat to human safety.

In response to a recent building collapse in the Ayetoro area of Osogbo, Governor Adeleke emphasized the critical need for securing approvals for building plans to ensure construction standards and prevent needless deaths and injuries.

“Building plans are not optional; they are essential to stop substandard houses that frequently collapse and pose safety risks to occupants and the environment,” the Governor stated.

Governor Adeleke has directed the Ministry of Lands to intensify the enforcement of approved building plans by developers and residents. Additionally, officials from the Ministry are to visit all development areas to ensure compliance with these plans.

The Governor also charged officials of local governments and the Ministry of Housing to proactively test the structural integrity of houses to prevent human tragedies. He stressed that substandard houses, once identified, should be demolished before they collapse and cause fatalities.

This directive comes in the wake of a panic-inducing building collapse in the Sabo area of Osogbo, Osun State capital, on Sunday.

According to Alaran, a resident and member of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, a loud sound was heard in the neighborhood as the building suddenly caved in.

Alaran reported that some people were inside the building, which is often used as a hideout for smoking and gambling, when it collapsed. Prompt response from policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps helped manage the situation. It was reported that five people were trapped inside when the building collapsed around 7:30 am.
