A University Professor based in Kogi State, Prof. Margaret Araoye narrated her experience on how her faith in humanity was restored by Mr. Abubakar Hassan, a honest Taxi driver.
According to Prof. Araoye, She lost her bag containing valuables including a laptop, N50,000 cash, a cheque, a pair of gold earrings, an international passport and an ATM Card in the course of a trip from Anyigba to Abuja.
“On my way from Anyigba to Abuja by commercial transport, I had to alight at Giri Junction, to pick a cab that that was to link me with another cab to my destination. I had a heavy suitcase and a bag.
“When we got to Lugbe, the cab driver hurriedly dropped me off when he saw a cab going to my final destination. In the process of dragging the heavy suitcase and in the usually chaotic motor park, I forgot to pick my bag.
“Upon arriving my hotel in Jabi, I realized that that I was no longer in possession of the bag containing my valuables, I went back to Giri Junction to report to the NURTW officials where I discovered that many drivers operated as freelancers and might not be traceable.
“Frantic and quite disturbed by this development, I exchanged contact numbers with the NURTW Officials and went back to the hotel but couldn’t concentrate on the assignment I came to Abuja for.
“Amidst the pandemonium I had forgotten to inform my husband, through the help of the Cab Driver I was able to get across to my husband who gave me the driver’s number.
“Alas! The driver had my bag, he had even attempted to reach me through Facebook, I got some of my colleagues to speak to him in Hausa and we arranged to meet at the hotel when he returned from a trip.
“Two days later, he emerged at the hotel with the bag and its contents intact! Despite the rot, decadence and socio-economic hardship in the country, it is refreshing to know that there are still men of integrity like Mr. Abubakar Hassan out there,” she said.
The honest driver, Mr. Abubakar Hassan who has been a taxi driver for over five years, said this is not the first time he has found valuables in his car.
According to Hassan; “Honesty is the best policy. There are drivers who don’t return things but there is no good in taking the things that don’t belong to you”.
Prof. Araoye called on well meaning Nigerians to celebrate the honest Driver; he can be reached on 08027164473.
Nigeria can be better if it’s citizens emulate the honesty of Mr Hassan
