President Bola Tinubu has urged young Nigerians engaging actively in the digital space to use their platforms as tools for promoting unity and national development rather than sowing division.
Speaking at the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit, themed ‘Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development’, Tinubu stressed the importance of responsible digital engagement, especially in verifying information before dissemination.
“I urge you to continue using digital platforms to advance our nation’s progress. Build businesses that employ others. Create content that uplifts and unites. Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” the President said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
He encouraged young content creators and entrepreneurs to act as positive agents of change by building ventures that create employment and generating content that emphasizes unity and shared values.
“You are not waiting for the future; you are building it. Digital media is now a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change,” Tinubu said.
He added that the creativity and resilience of Nigeria’s youth were proof that digital media is no longer just a social tool but a transformative force for economic and social progress.
The President further assured that his administration remains committed to supporting innovation in the digital space through the National Digital Innovation Fund and other startup-friendly policies.
However, he cautioned practitioners to guard against the dangers of disinformation and cyber threats.
Summit convener and Presidential aide on New Media, Segun Dada, noted that digital media had evolved from a personal connection tool into a powerful driver of communication, innovation, and influence.
He highlighted the need to harness its power responsibly, balancing progress with concerns such as privacy and social cohesion.
