The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State on Thursday exchanged sharp words over an alleged threat made by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, against the Alasi of Asi in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale.

A voice note that surfaced online earlier in the week, believed to contain Egbedun’s voice, captured the Speaker angrily cursing during a phone conversation with a woman suspected to be the monarch’s wife.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the APC accused the Speaker of acting in a manner that disrespects the traditional institution and undermines the integrity of the State Assembly.

The party demanded Egbedun’s impeachment, urged his constituents to initiate a recall process, and called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to launch a full investigation and prosecution.

“If someone like Egbedun is the one setting the tone in the Osun House of Assembly, then one shouldn’t be surprised by the kind of poor governance witnessed under the Adeleke administration,” the APC stated.

“Past Assembly leaders conducted themselves with dignity and honoured the traditional rulers of this state. Why can’t Egbedun lead like they did?”

The statement further claimed that the Speaker’s behavior reflects the broader breakdown in decorum and leadership under the current government, alleging that the Assembly has become a tool for political excesses.

In a separate reaction, the Osun State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) also condemned Egbedun’s alleged outburst and insisted that his position should not exempt him from scrutiny, urging a thorough and unbiased investigation.

However, the PDP, in a counter-statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Oladele Bamiji, dismissed the APC’s stance as politically motivated.

The party maintained that the voice note was taken out of context and linked Egbedun’s reaction to ongoing threats to his life, which it claimed had already been reported to the police.

“These threats are under active investigation. The APC’s intervention is hypocritical and only seeks to score cheap political points. Their attempt to incite the public against the Speaker is dangerous and should be condemned,” the PDP said.

The ruling party urged the police to expand their investigation to include opposition figures, accusing the APC of attempting to destabilize Osun State after suffering electoral setbacks.

The PDP also appealed to Oba Oyewale to remain calm and allow the authorities to carry out a proper investigation.

It reaffirmed its confidence in Speaker Egbedun’s leadership and his ability to reconcile with the monarch.

“We trust in the Speaker’s capacity to lead with integrity, address this matter maturely, and continue to represent his people with focus and accountability,” the party concluded.
