The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially fixed dates for the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement on Friday, during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to Yakubu, the Ekiti State governorship election will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2026, while that of Osun State has been scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026.
“The timetable aligns with constitutional and legal provisions, ensuring proper preparation and transparency,” the INEC boss stated.
The new RECs, whose appointments were recently confirmed by the National Assembly, took the oath of office amidst calls for deeper electoral reforms and increased technological integration.
Prof. Yakubu also revealed that INEC is in the final phase of preparations for several bye-elections to fill vacant seats in both the National Assembly and various State Houses of Assembly.
