The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly refuted allegations of targeted killings of Christians in the country, describing such reports as misleading and harmful to national unity.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, the government expressed concern over what it called a “wave of misinformation” aimed at influencing foreign nations — particularly the United States — to label Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) for religious persecution.
The statement, signed by Acting Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebenfa, acknowledged the country’s security challenges but insisted they are not driven by religious bias.
It clarified that most cases of insurgency and banditry, especially in the predominantly Muslim northern region, are not targeted at Christians or any particular religious group.
“Nigeria is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation, and the government remains committed to protecting the lives and properties of all citizens, irrespective of faith, ethnicity, or gender,” the Ministry stated.
It attributed the nation’s security issues to criminality, terrorism, and communal clashes — including farmer-herder disputes — without religious undertones.
Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government highlighted ongoing efforts to combat insecurity through the deployment of security forces, intelligence gathering, and community engagement initiatives.
The statement also announced the creation of a Ministry of Livestock Development, with a special adviser appointed to resolve disputes between farmers and pastoral herders.
The Ministry called on international partners, the media, and civil society to verify information before making statements that could inflame tensions.
It urged all stakeholders to avoid spreading unverified claims that might undermine Nigeria’s unity.
“Nigeria remains a beacon of religious tolerance and coexistence in Africa, and we are committed to preserving this heritage.
It added that government is open to welcoming international support while rejecting any attempts to distort the narrative or sow discord among Nigerians.
