The Osun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing the state’s tourism sector through collaboration with key stakeholders, including hoteliers, transport operators, and community leaders from towns and villages with various tourist attractions.
This was the focus of a roundtable discussion on Inbound and Outbound Tourism Collaboration held in Osogbo, organized by the Osun Tourism Board.
Participants deliberated on strategies to improve cultural tourism, ecotourism, and service delivery across the state.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Honourable Fafa Ojo Abiodun, emphasized the importance of community-based tourism in driving growth.
He highlighted traditional festivals and cultural landmarks as key attractions that draw visitors from within and outside the state.
“Tourism thrives at the communal level, especially through festivals that bring people together. These events attract visitors, boost local economies, and create opportunities for cultural exchange. The government is committed to providing security, infrastructure, and amenities to ensure these events are successful,” Ojo stated.
He added, “Our focus is to make Osun State a tourism-friendly destination where both locals and visitors can explore our rich heritage in a safe and welcoming environment.”
The Chairman of the Osun State Tourism Board, Honourable Taiwo Adeleke, called for greater synergy among stakeholders in the tourism industry.
He noted that the roundtable discussion was aimed at identifying hidden opportunities and enhancing standards within the sector.
“This program unites operators in hospitality, entertainment, and related businesses to brainstorm ways of improving service delivery, increasing revenue, and making Osun a competitive destination for tourists. Our aim is to ensure that everyone, from operators to local communities, benefits from the sector’s growth,” Adeleke explained.
He further stated, “If we want to put Osun on the global tourism map, all hands must be on deck. We must harness our strengths, explore untapped opportunities, and adopt best practices in the industry.”
The General Manager of the Osun State Tourism Board, Oluwatoyin Ajayi, underscored the importance of host communities in tourism development.
She noted that sensitizing these communities is critical to harnessing their potential.
“Tourists, particularly during festivals, are looking for places to unwind and explore. Communities must learn to showcase their unique attractions, as this will create economic opportunities such as job creation, cultural exchange, and foreign investment,” Ajayi said.
She added, “It is important for our people to realize that tourism is not just about fun; it is a powerful tool for development. A thriving tourism sector brings income, infrastructure, and visibility to our communities.”
Tourism consultant and business promoter, Oluwadamilola Ojo, described collaboration among government, investors, and stakeholders as essential for sustainable tourism growth.
“Tourism is a game-changer for any economy. For Osun State, it is time to leverage our natural resources, cultural heritage, and hospitality industry to attract visitors. Collaboration is the way forward,” Ojo noted.
She further revealed, “The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has lined up major initiatives between January and March next year. These include training programs for operators, cultural festivals, and events that will project Osun State as a vibrant tourism hub.”
The roundtable featured interactive sessions, networking opportunities, and presentations from critical stakeholders, including community development practitioners, hoteliers, tour operators, and representatives of bars, restaurants, spas, amusement parks, and lounges.
Participants shared initiatives aimed at repositioning Osun State as a leading destination for domestic and international tourists.
