The American University of Nigeria (AUN) celebrated its 16th Annual Founder’s Day and 20th Anniversary in a grand ceremony on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

The event, held at the prestigious Lamido Aliyu Musdafa Commencement Hall in Yola, brought together political leaders, diplomats, scholars, and traditional rulers in a vibrant showcase of unity and commitment to education and leadership.

Former Vice President and AUN founder, Atiku Abubakar, alongside 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, headlined the event.

Obi, a close ally of Atiku, delivered a stirring keynote address emphasizing leadership, education, and national progress.

In his opening remarks, AUN President Dewayne Frazier lauded the university’s two-decade journey, attributing its successes to Atiku’s visionary leadership. “Today, we celebrate the fruits of two decades of steadfast vision,” Frazier declared, commending the institution’s staff, students, and alumni for their collective efforts.

The American Embassy in Nigeria, represented by Deputy Ambassador David Greene, praised AUN’s contributions to Yola and its neighboring communities.

The Embassy highlighted the institution’s impactful humanitarian work and applauded its role in advancing education and leadership in Nigeria.

In his keynote speech, Peter Obi paid tribute to Atiku’s commitment to education, describing it as “a calling, not a profit-driven venture.”

Drawing inspiration from Chinua Achebe’s words, Obi identified Nigeria’s leadership deficit as the root cause of its challenges.

He called on students to embrace integrity, competence, and compassion, urging them to transcend tribal and religious divides in their quest to lead.

Obi emphasized the transformative power of education and its role in driving societal progress.

He challenged Nigeria’s youth to prioritize merit and excellence, declaring, “The future of Nigeria lies in the hands of our youth.”

The event also spotlighted AUN’s commitment to academic excellence and community development.

The AUN Honour Society recognized students for their outstanding achievements and their contributions to community advancement.

Vice President for Academics, Dan Okereke, announced the creation of an annual STEM competition for Adamawa State secondary schools, underscoring AUN’s dedication to nurturing innovation among future leaders.

Atiku Abubakar expressed deep gratitude for AUN’s growth and impact over the years. Reflecting on the institution’s journey, he acknowledged the contributions of founding board members, including the late Professor Robert Pastor and Mr. Ahmed Joda.

“Today, we celebrate not only a milestone but a movement — a vision that has touched countless lives,” Atiku said.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic presentation of a commemorative book to Atiku, Peter Obi, and Senator Ben Obi, Chairman of AUN’s Board of Trustees.

The gesture marked their pivotal roles in shaping the university’s legacy.

As AUN enters its third decade, Atiku expressed optimism for the future. “This 20th anniversary marks only the beginning of our journey ahead,” he said, reinforcing the institution’s dedication to education, leadership, and societal transformation.
