President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to postpone the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest scheduled for next month.
This appeal was communicated by Information Minister Mohammed Idris following a meeting with the President.
Idris stated that President Tinubu believes there is no immediate need for the protest and has requested that the organizers delay their plans to give the government time to address their grievances.
The protest, which has been gaining traction on social media, is set to occur across all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in August.
The anonymous organizers have expressed frustration over the severe economic hardship facing Nigerians, exacerbated by recent government policies, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives have all issued warnings against the planned demonstration.
Additionally, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Senator Ali Ndume have urged President Tinubu to address the concerns of the largely youthful protesters.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has also cautioned that staging the protest could potentially lead to violence and asset destruction reminiscent of the EndSARS protest against police brutality in October 2020.
